Abstract:
Background: Mental health is an essential component of health. 1/8 individuals worldwide suffer from a mental disorder and need immediate action. Mental illnesses constitute 15% of the global disease burden. Nearly 14% of India population requires active therapeutic interventions. Aim and objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the integrated Mental Health Nursing Intervention on knowledge, attitude, perception and social support system regarding mental illness among caregivers. Methodology: A Quantitative research approach with Quasi-Experimental study was adopted. A total of 20 caregivers (10 subjects each in the experimental and control group) participated. The Non-Probability Purposive Sampling technique was used to select the subjects. Data was collected using a structured interview technique. Results: Statistical analysis of the background variables revealed homogeneity between experimental and control groups in the pre-test. The comparison of the level of knowledge, attitude, perception and social support system based on the statistics revealed that the F value for knowledge, attitude, perception and social support system in the experimental group were 27.63, 27.63, 30.63 and 35.30 respectively. This has shown very high statistical significance at P=0.001, thus indicating that the integrated Mental Health Nursing Intervention was effective. There was a significant positive fair correlation and association between the knowledge, attitude, perception and social support system in the experimental group. Conclusion: The data collection tools used were reliable, feasible and appropriate to be applied in the main study and the integrated Mental Health Nursing Intervention was effective in significantly reducing the perception of burden, enhancing the knowledge, attitude, and social support system. Hence, the proposed plan of research can be applied in the main study.
